Shanahan: Latest Matches are Privileged Opportunities For Young Players: The Washington red man* have 3 games persisting in the 2011 flavour and although at forty-nine, it comes along they have lilliputian to child's play for, Coach microphone Shanahan says the continued developing of younger players ranks amidst the top precedencies down the home stretch along.
The Redskins on Sunday had a combined 9 1st- or sophomore players roleplaying key roles on offense and defence lawyers. On offensive activity, the Redskins called on 4 greenhorns — running away backs Roy Helu, Evan Royster and on the offensive linesmen willy Adam Smith and Maurice Hurt. Sophomore professional Darrel Brigham Young remained the starter at fullback. On defence, Washington started greenhorn line backer Ryan Kerrigan, who hasn’t missed a break down all harden, greenhorn safety DeJon Gomes and sophomore line backer Perry Riley. And sophomore line backer Rob Jackson was used to relieve Brian Orakpo at outside line backer.
Tyler Polumbus unexpectedly started at right tackle and he is in his fourth season, but he had no extended time during his career, either.
Shanahan has lowered its expectations for victory, but believes that every shot will help young people that Redskins lay a foundation for the next season.
"Any time you are improving, especially with the guys who haven't played, as Maurice Hurt, you have a guy like Willie Smith, a guy as Tyler arrive. Any time you have some backups come in and have a bit more cohesion, meaning that these guys are getting valuable experience. … Come next year, these guys have more than one game [and] some of their many games. "
Helu continues to impress his coaches. Sunday, the product of Nebraska posted his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game, becoming the first rookie in the history of the Redskins back to accomplish that feat.
"Is a student of the game and works hard. He's very conscientious [e] very responsible, "said Shanahan. "Usually when you get guys like that, it gives them some responsibility. They are species of biting at the bit, and this is what he is. Is a guy that I think looks ahead to play. He did not commit many mistakes and when he makes an error, does it really hurt him. So guys who really like it usually does not hit the wall even if it's a long season for him. "
Kerrigan was a bright spot for Defense all season long and leads the team with 6.5 sacks. Meanwhile, Shanahan sees Riley — who started the last five games inside linebacker — like another promising building block.
"I think he just keeps on getting better and it's going to be a growing process of defence and always comfortable with learning both inside positions," Shanahan said of Riley, which as a Starter is an average of 10.2 tackles a game. "You can see that can run. He had great agility. He has a nose for the football and his best years are ahead of him. "
